Professorship (W3) Sustainable Real Estate and Land Development in conjunction with the position of Scientific Director of the ILS
Our profile
The successful candidate will be appointed as a professor at TU Dortmund University and will be granted leave to the ILS – Institute for Regional and Urban Development Research (gGmbH) in Dortmund with a reduced teaching load of two semester hours per week (2 SWS). The position includes the scientific leadership of the ILS as well as its legal representation under corporate law.

TU Dortmund University comprises 17 departments in the natural and engineering sciences as well as the humanities and social sciences and is a dynamic university with a strong profile in research, teaching, promotion of young scientists and transfer. The Department of Spatial Planning, with around 1,300 students and 16 professorships, is one of the largest institutions for spatial planning education in Europe.

The ILS – Institute for Regional and Urban Development Research (gGmbH) is an excellence-oriented, non-university research institute in the field of spatial research and a founding member of the Johannes-Rau Research Association. The State of North Rhine–Westphalia is its sole shareholder. Practice-oriented basic research at the ILS aims to improve understanding of the dynamics and diversity of urbanisation processes. In active dialogue with practitioners, policymakers, and society, the institute develops—through interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary as well as internationally comparative research—the foundations for the socially and ecologically sustainable transformation and development of urban spaces. The ILS is actively engaged in the spatial research network “Leibniz R – Spatial Knowledge for Society and the Environment” as well as in further regional, national, and international collaborations and networks and defines itself as an important hub of spatial research in North Rhine–Westphalia, Germany, and Europe. The ILS is located in Dortmund.

Profile of the professorship
You represent the field of real estate development and sustainable land development in research and further develop it with (inter)national visibility. In doing so, you participate in research networks and cooperations within and outside TU Dortmund University and the ILS and are committed to promoting early career researchers. In addition, you contribute appropriately to the department’s teaching activities and are willing to supervise student projects.

Your qualifications
You have obtained a relevant doctorate with above‑average success and have acquired a post-doctoral lecture qualification (Habilitation) or an equivalent qualification. You demonstrate your research excellence in the field of the professorship through continuous national and international publications in recognized peer‑reviewed venues and have been successful in acquiring third‑party funding. Experience in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary collaboration as well as in applied research is also expected. In addition to leadership, communication, and teamwork skills, you have management experience. You are willing to contribute to the implementation of the equality goals of the ILS and the Department of Spatial Planning. Additionally, you have the potential for teaching excellence and have the ability and willingness to teach in both English and German. Willingness to participate in academic self‑administration complete your profile. Moreover, the recruitment requirements in Sections 36 and 37 of the North Rhine-Westphalia Higher Education Act (Gesetz über die Hochschulen des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen, HG) apply.
