TU Dortmund University comprises 17 departments in the natural and engineering sciences as well as the human-ities and social sciences and is a dynamic university with a strong profile in research, teaching, promotion of young scientists and transfer. The Department of Social Sciences comprises the Institute of Sociology (ISO), the Social Research Center Dortmund (sfs), and the Institute for Interdisciplinary Didactics (IDIF).
The Center for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS) is a central hub for forward-looking digitalization research in North Rhine-Westphalia – funded by the state of NRW since 2021. The mission: to shape the digital transformation in a way that serves people and society. At CAIS, we develop scientifically grounded and practice-oriented solutions to the major challenges of digitalization.
Profile of the professorship
You have a research profile in social science in the field of digital transformation in work and society, preferably in one or more of the following areas: digital futures and participation in working environments (e.g., digital sovereignty and participation in enterprises and society, participatory scenarios and foresight methods, shaping and conflicts of diversity and inclusion); digital inequalities and platformization (e.g., inequalities in the digitization of work, working conditions, and governance of platform work, corporate social responsibility). You pursue research using quantitative and/or qualitative methods. You develop the research area (internationally) in a visible manner and are compatible with the research priorities of CAIS. In addition, you are willing to help shape interdisciplinary research projects and participate in research networks and collaborations within and outside TU Dortmund University. You demonstrate a strong willingness to engage in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary collaboration and to work at the intersections between science, society, and practice, and you are prepared to contribute to science communication and transfer. You are willing to acquire third-party funds, are committed to promoting early career researchers and participate appropriately in the teaching activities of the Department of Social Sciences.
Upon assuming the professorship at TU Dortmund University, you will be granted leave of absence in accordance with the “Jülicher Modell” to lead a research program at CAIS. During the leave of absence, the teaching load comprises two weekly hours per semester.
For the W1 professorship, the appointment is initially for a period of three years as a temporary civil servant. In the course of the third year, this status will be reviewed and may be extended for a further three years depending on performance. At the end of this six-year assistant professorship at the latest, the tenure track will lead to continued employment as a tenured W2 professor, provided that the necessary aptitude, competence and academic performance have been demonstrated and that the legal requirements pertaining to Section 38 of the North Rhine-Westphalia Higher Education Act (Gesetz über die Hochschulen des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen, HG NRW) are met.
Your qualifications
You have obtained a doctorate with above-average success and you have demonstrated your excellence in social science research on the digital transformation of work and society through relevant (inter)national publications in recognized venues including peer-reviewed ones. Additionally, for the W2 professorship, a post-doctoral lecture qualification (Habilitation) or an equivalent qualification, continuous relevant international publications in recognized venues including peer-reviewed ones, success in the independent competitive acquisition of third-party funding, and a high international visibility of the scientific achievements are expected. All applicants will have the potential for teaching excellence. Social and leadership skills and the willingness to participate in academic self-administration will complete your profile. Moreover, the recruitment requirements in Section 36 and 37 HG NRW apply.
